On entend souvent parler de nom de domaine d’un site, d’achat voire de réservation de nom de domaine. Mais qu’est-ce qu’un nom de domaine ? À quoi sert-il ? Pourquoi l’utilise-t-on ? Peut s’en servir selon nos envies ?
Le nom de domaine représente le nom et la partie visible d’un site web. Il permet à l’utilisateur de se souvenir plus facilement de l’adresse d’un site et d’y accéder ou d’y retourner en toute simplicité.
Concrètement, chaque ordinateur (ou terminal) connecté à internet possède une adresse IP. Cette adresse est une suite de chiffres permettant d’identifier chaque ordinateur (une sorte de numéro d’identité). Chaque adresse IP correspond à un nom différent, à un nom de domaine différent.
La correspondance entre un nom de domaine et une adresse IP se fait via le Système de Noms de Domaine (DNS). Lorsque l’on saisit dans un navigateur web l’adresse d’un site, le DNS cherche à quelle adresse IP correspond le nom saisi.
La structure d’un nom de domaine est relativement simple. Prenons un exemple : www.nomsdedomaine.com
Il est également possible de trouver, en plus du TLD, un SLD (pour Secondary Level Domain) comme par exemple .gouv.fr.
